Apple's iPhone 3G S: 1 Million Sold In Opening Weekend

Apple is so confident in the opening weekend sales of the iPhone 3G S that it trotted out an old, familiar face to report its opening weekend sales.

"Customers are voting and the iPhone is winning," Steve Jobs, CEO of Apple, said in a statement. "With over 50,000 applications available from Apple's revolutionary App Store, iPhone momentum is stronger than ever."

Jobs, the recently returned CEO of Apple, said that smartphone customers are choosing the iPhone 3G S over the other mobile device options that are available. The company reported that between its launch and Sunday June 21, more than 1 million iPhone 3G S units were sold.

In addition, Apple said that in the five days since it debuted, the iPhone OS 3.0 has been downloaded by more than 6 million customers.

Interestingly enough, in July 2008 Apple sold more than 1 million iPhone 3Gs in its weekend debut. Meanwhile, the App store had 10 million downloads in its first weekend, which was also launched in July 2008.

Apple's numbers are somewhat in conflict with the numbers released by Piper Jaffray analyst Gene Munster. According to Munster and his team -- which spent the weekend polling customers in New York and Minneapolis -- about 750,000 iPhone 3G S units were sold, Fortune reported.

Initially, Munster predicted that Apple would sell about 500,000 iPhone 3G S smartphones. Shortly after Munster made his findings and predictions known, Apple released its statement confirming that the number of new iPhones sold matched the numbers for the iPhone 3G last summer.

Steve Jobs left Apple in January for medical reasons and handed the reins of the company over to Tim Cook, COO of Apple. This weekend news emerged that while he was on leave, Jobs may have received a liver transplant in Tennessee.
