HP Adds To Application Management Portfolio With Stratavia Acquisition

The acquisition of the privately held Stratavia expands HP's software and solutions portfolio by adding deployment, configuration and management tools for databases, middleware and packaged applications, according to HP. The software will help HP customers simplify application deployment and manage hybrid IT environments made up of on-premise, on-demand, physical and virtual systems, the company said.

The Stratavia acquisition comes little more than a week after HP said it would buy Fortify, a developer of software used to guard against security threats to corporate applications. That product is being added to HP's software development and application lifecycle products.

The Stratavia deal doesn't have the visibility of HP's $1.6-billion effort to buy storage system vendor 3Par or the company's acquisition of Palm in July for $1.2 billion. But it represent's a significant move by HP to expand the line of application management products offered by HP Software & Solutions, the company's enterprise software division.

"As applications and IT environments become increasingly complex, organizations need to automate changes that range from large-scale application updates to simple one-line configuration updates with consistency and control," said Bill Veghte, Software and Solutions executive vice president, in a statement.

The addition of Stratavia to HP's product portfolio provides opportunities for HP channel partners who are helping customers build out hybrid IT environments, private clouds and virtualized systems, said Erik Frieberg, marketing vice president for business technology optimization operations, HP Software and Solutions.

The Stratavia products also will help businesses with their regulatory compliance initiatives through better IT system configuration and change management, Frieberg said.

HP will combine Stratavia's database and application automation tools with the application deployment module within the HP Server Automation suite, part of the company's business service automation portfolio, Frieberg said.

"This solution is designed for the way IT is working today," he said, noting the rapid growth of hybrid IT environments. It will offer customers "a one-stop shop for infrastructure and application deployment management," he said.
