Docker Names New CEO While Top Executive Golub Moves To Container Tech Company's Board

Docker, the fast-growing developer of the popular open-source software container platform, has named a new CEO with the company's current top executive moving to Docker's board of directors.

Current CEO Ben Golub, one of Docker's founders, will move to the company's board while current chairman Steve Singh will become Docker CEO.

Golub disclosed the change in a blog post Tuesday morning.

The change comes less than two weeks after the company's DockerCon conference where Golub spoke about the rapid adoption of Docker's container technology in the four years since the company's launch.

Golub has been CEO since April 2013. Today Docker has more than 330 employees and the company's container technology is used by millions of developers.

"It is naturally with some mixed emotions that I share the news that Steve Singh will become Docker's new CEO," Golub said in his blog post. "While there is always some uncertainty about changing roles, I am 100 percent certain that Steve is the right person for Docker.

"He is an incredible individual and leader, with a broad base of experience that includes founding and growing one of the most successful enterprise companies, Concur," Golub wrote in the blog.

Golub's blog doesn't specifically say why the company is switching CEOs.

Singh was president of SAP's Business Networks and Applications operations until late last month when SAP, during the company's first quarter earnings announcement, said he was leaving the company as of April 30. He joined SAP when it acquired Concur in 2014.

In his blog post Golub, who worked at six startups before Docker – three as CEO – says that his "heart lies in startups" and that "different leaders with different skills are needed at different stages in a company's history."

"Steve is the right leader for Docker now, and I am confident that his leadership will enable Docker to fulfill its incredible potential," he writes.
