VMware, AWS Expand Hybrid Cloud Partnership With New Migration, Disaster Recovery Services

VMware and Amazon Web Services have expanded the companies' hybrid cloud partnership with new cloud migration and disaster recovery services.

The new migration services allow customers to migrate workloads from on-premises VMware clusters to VMware Cloud on AWS without disruptions to the application and without making changes to network configurations, the company said in a statement.

Customers will also be able to use AWS Direct Connect for reliable, high-speed private network connectivity for faster app migration with VMware vMotion.

VMware Hybrid Cloud Extension is a new add-on Software-as-a-Service offering for VMware Cloud on AWS that will allow large-scale migrations between on-premises VMware vSphere 5.0 environments and VMware Cloud on AWS with no re-platforming, retesting or changes to tooling, the company said.

The new disaster recovery product allows customers to keep a copy of applications and data in the AWS cloud in order to ensure continuity in the event of a disaster.

VMware also said it is offering discounted one- and three-year VMware Cloud on AWS subscriptions that could result in 50 percent discounts on the systems' existing hourly rate depending on several variables, as well as a loyalty program that offers even deeper discounts to on-premises vSphere, NSX and vSAN customers.

The new capabilities and discounts are being introduced just one quarter after VMware Cloud on AWS became available. VMware unveiled the expansion at the AWS re:Invent conference in Las Vegas Tuesday.
