Oracle Has Its Eyes On Machine Learning, Big Data With Latest Acquisition
Oracle made a big move to make its cloud more attractive to data professionals Wednesday with a deal to acquire DataScience.com.
The Los Angeles-based startup founded in 2014 built an enterprise platform on which data science teams can organize data, access computing resources, and execute model development workflows.
Terms of the deal were not disclosed.
The platform unifies data science tools, libraries and languages with cloud infrastructure with the aim of making it easier for data scientists to collaborate and push their work into production environments.

"With the combination of Oracle and DataScience.com, customers will harness a single data science platform to more effectively leverage machine learning and big data for predictive analysis and improved business results," Amit Zavery, executive vice president of Oracle Cloud Platform, said in a prepared statement.
Gleb Otochkin, a principal consultant Pythian, an Ottawa, Canada-based Oracle partner specializing in data analytics, told CRN the acquisition will enable Oracle to integrate all its big data, analytics and data science tools in one place with a unified self-serve interface.
"This will empower developers and data scientists to build a platform on their own using one single interface, simplifying the process and making the development cycle shorter and more efficient," Otochkin told CRN.
Oracle has put a lot of emphasis on artificial intelligence of late, rolling out services that self-manage databases and other cloud tools by integrating machine learning capabilities into those products.
