Akamai Technologies said it has fixed an issue with its Edge DNS service, which was causing widespread outages across the internet early Thursday afternoon.

The Cambridge, Mass.-based company said the Edge DNS service is “resuming normal operations,” less than an hour after the company reported a disruption with the service, which was bringing down multiple websites and services.

“We have implemented a fix for this issue, and based on current observations, the service is resuming normal operations,” an Akamai spokesperson told CRN in a statement. “We will continue to monitor to ensure that the impact has been fully mitigated.”

In subsequent statements on the company’s Twitter account, Akamai said the issue was not the result of a cyberattack but a bug caused by a software configuration update, which was fixed by rolling back the update. The company apologized for the “inconvenience that resulted” and said it would review its software update process “to prevent future disruptions.”

We apologize for the inconvenience that resulted. We are reviewing our software update process to prevent future disruptions. (3/3)
