Google Database Services Portfolio Gets A Refresh
Google is securing and speeding up the often tedious data management process to help partners and end users secure, search and make better sense of their data, all while using their time wisely.
The internet giant revealed three updates on Wednesday evening to its database and developer tool portfolio, including the newly revamped Cloud Source Repositories, the general availability of Cloud Memorystore, and a beta version of its new Container Registry Vulnerability Scanning service.
Cloud Source Repositories, which has a brand-new user interface along with new capabilities, is now available in beta, Russell Wolf, product manager for Mountain View, Calif.-based Google, said in a blog post. Cloud Source Repositories uses the same technology that powers Google Search and can help with a task that is essential to many engineers—searching for pieces of code.

The offering is now powered by the same indexing and retrieval technology that Google's own engineers are using, Wolf said. Cloud Search Repositories lets developers access and search across all their company's code for a particular file or function in a single query, instead of looking for code that may have been saved locally. Filters can also be applied to searches, Google said.
"Using this code search can improve developer productivity, whether you host your code in Cloud Source Repositories or mirror your code for the cloud versions of GitHub or BitBucket," Wolf said.
Wolf said Cloud Source Repositories users will get answers to their queries quickly—much faster than the product's previous functionality. The index processing feature is also just as fast, he said, so developers are always searching and scanning up-to-date code.
Users can now try Cloud Source Repositories for free through the free tier of Google Cloud Platform.
Meanwhile, Cloud Memorystore, an in-memory data service that Google first introduced in April, is now generally available. Cloud Memorystore is a managed solution built on Google cloud infrastructure that was designed to work with Redis, an open-source cloud data service. Developers can use Cloud Memorystore to build application caches that provides sub-millisecond data access, Google said.
The offering lets developers automate tasks like provisioning, scaling and failover for their cloud-hosted applications so they don't have to keep up with monotonous IT functions, said Gopal Ashok, product manager for Google, in his blog post about Cloud Memorystore.
Google also said the Cloud Memorystore service is being expanded to its Tokyo, Singapore and Netherlands regions. The service already is available in Google's Oregon, Iowa and South Carolina regions, and internationally in Belgium and Taiwan.
And to help IT professionals keep their continuous integration and continuous delivery (CI/CD) process secure, Google unveiled a new service now in beta, Container Registry Vulnerability Scanning.
The latest service will help businesses build security into their CI/CD pipeline by integrating container image scanning before problematic images can by deployed, said Juan Sebastian Ovideo, Google product manager, and Nikhil Kaul, product marketing manager for the Google Cloud team, in their blog post.
"When we set out to build vulnerability scanning for container images, we started from the premise that security needs to be built into the CI/CD from the very beginning to cut down on time spent remediating downstream security issues and reduce risk expose. Furthermore, security controls need to happen automatically," Ovideo and Kaul said.
Container Registry Vulnerability Scanning can be plugged into any CI\CD tool from any vendor or from Google's own managed CI/CD platform, Cloud Build.
