Watch: Larry Ellison Says AWS Could Be Hacked, Unveils Gen2 Cloud At Oracle OpenWorld

San Francisco turned red this week for Oracle OpenWorld 2018. This year, the annual customer and partner conference has put a spotlight on cloud security and automation. Here’s what you missed from day one:

Oracle Executive Chairman and Chief Technology Officer Larry Ellison took shots at Amazon and went so far to say that the AWS cloud system could be hacked. AWS, and just about all other providers, place their control code on the same servers that host customer workloads, according to Ellison, who went on to say that a malicious customer can do many pernicious things through their accounts—change the provider's control code, access different servers, look at other customers' data and exfiltrate that data.

Oracle solved those problems when it built its second-generation Oracle Cloud Infrastructure (OCI), creating new hardware configurations and software that implement a network of dedicated, independent servers running cloud control systems at the perimeter of the network. To further bolster security, Oracle deploys advanced artificial intelligence in the form of autonomous robots that search and destroy threats. The platform also features Oracle’s autonomous database technology, which was first introduced at last year’s conference and has the ability to self-patch and self-heal.

Also on Monday, Oracle embedded more emerging technologies into its cloud applications. That includes artificial intelligence, machine learning and blockchain. Oracle ERP Cloud will include added features such as Intelligent Process Automation, Assisted Expense Reports, Intelligent Payments and Supplier Recommendations to help organizations remove many of the mundane tasks associated with running a business. Plus, the new Oracle Subscription Management enables organizations to operate hybrid product and service/subscription business models on the same platform to generate additional revenue from goods and services.
