CES 2013: ViewSonic Debuts New Android-Based 'Smart Display'

Leading the pack was ViewSonic's new VSD240 "smart display," a 24-inch HD monitor that the company said is ideal for both consumers and enterprise users. The new VSD240 joins the 21.5-inch VSD220, which launched in September, to round out ViewSonic's broader "smart display" family.

Like the VSD220, the new VSD240 runs Google's Android operating system and can be used as either a stand-alone display or tablet, or as a replacement for traditional desktop monitors. ViewSonic said the VSD240 boasts a 1,920-x-1,080 full HD LED display, a 1.7GHz Nvidia GPU, a Texas Instruments OMAP 4 processor and support for multitouch.

According to Gene Ornstead, director of product marketing at ViewSonic, "smart displays" like the VSD240 and VSD220 offer an opportunity for ViewSonic solution providers to target the digital signage space, vertical markets and the enterprise with just a single product.

"[Smart displays] could be the next evolution in the monitor business, as a desktop solution," Ornstead said, during a September interview with CRN. "At the same time, it's going to be a great time for verticals in digital signage or any kind of smart, interactive product you want to deploy in the digital signage market."

Meanwhile, ViewSonic also used CES as a platform for unveiling its new Windows 8-certified TD 40 series of displays, including the 23-inch TD2340, 27-inch TD2740 and 32-inch TD3240. All three monitors are targeted largely at the enterprise and offer full 10-point multitouch support and a 1,920-by-1,080 full HD display.

ViewSonic said the TD2340 will be available in January for $599, the TD3240 will be available in February for $2,499 and the TD2740 will be available in April for $799. Separately, the new VSD240 "smart display" will start shipping in April for $499.
