Dell Snaps Up RNA Networks For Memory Virtualization Tech

Dell did not make a formal announcement of the acquisition. Instead, word about the deal came from the RNA Networks Web site, which as of Monday afternoon was still up but which was limited to a single page where it said, "RNA Networks, Inc. has been acquired by Dell Inc."

RNA develops memory virtualization software that accelerates applications by extending server memory and speeding up storage, Dell said.

InformationWeek reported in 2009 that RNA develops technology that creates a shared memory pool across multiple servers into a virtual device. That could, for instance, allow virtual machines to dynamically increase their memory by taking from the memory pool for heavy workloads, InformationWeek reported.

A Dell spokesperson confirmed the acquisition was closed on Thursday, and said that RNA's employees will be staying with Dell. However, the spokesperson said Dell declined to reveal the price it paid.

The Dell spokesperson also said that Dell will leverage RNA's technology in future offerings, but that the company was not yet ready to discuss integration plans.

The OregonLive.com Web site on Monday said that Portland, Ore.-based RNA was founded in 2006, and had about 20 employees. The company had a $7 million round of venture funding in 2009, and has been soliciting buyout offers for about six months, OregonLive.com reported.

Dell has traditionally been a company that shied away from acquisitions, but since its acquisition of EqualLogic in early 2008 has run up a string of purchases, the most recent of which is Compellent.

Dell has also recently shown its willingness to integrate its acquisitions into its existing product lines. At the Dell Storage Forum earlier this month, Dell released several new storage products combining some of its acquired technology, and unveiled plans to do so with more of its storage line this year.
