Sophos Launches Virtualized Gateway

The company launched on Thursday Web Gateway for VMware's virtual machine. The Sophos software can be downloaded from VMware's marketplace. "The functionality hasn't changed," Chris McCormack, product marketing manager for Sophos, said. "We are only offering it (the appliance) in a new form factor."

The gateway provides URL reputation filtering and malware scanning. The product also enables the creation and enforcement of web policies to safeguard against sensitive data loss and can scan encrypted HTTPS traffic.

Sophos has integrated the gateway with its Endpoint security product, so companies can extend gateway-configured Web policies to mobile devices outside the corporate network. Last month, U.K.-based Sophos launched Endpoint v10 and made it available in three tiers, enterprise, advanced and basic, to give resellers a version for every market segment.

New to Endpoint is patch assessment. The software scans desktops and laptops and reports back through a management console the patches that are missing or out of date.
