Nirvanix Files Chapter 11, Works With IBM To Migrate Customer Data
Nirvanix, which last month told customers they would have to move their data from the Nirvanix cloud before it was shut down, on Monday posted a notice on its website about its bankruptcy filing.
The notice simply read, "On October 1, 2013, Nirvanix voluntarily sought Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in order to pursue all alternatives to maximize value for its creditors while continuing its efforts to provide the best possible transition for customers."

Nirvanix executives were unavailable to provide further information.
Nirvanix had attracted several hundred customers to its cloud service, especially enterprise-sized businesses and institutions, mainly through partnerships with such companies as IBM.
IBM, which included the Nirvanix cloud storage service as part of its SoftLayer cloud infrastructure offering, is one of those partners currently trying to help customers move their data from Nirvanix to other public clouds.
Nirvanix on its website also said it is helping migrate customers to alternative cloud offerings including IBM SoftLayer, Amazon S3, Google Storage and Microsoft Azure and has an agreement with IBM to aid in the migration.
Nirvanix had been providing enterprise-class public, private and hybrid cloud storage as a service. The company owns its own public cloud infrastructure based in multiple data centers, or nodes, around the world. It also uses its technology to help customers build private clouds using either the customer's own storage infrastructure or a segmented, non-shared part of the Nirvanix public cloud.
Nirvanix in mid-September originally gave customers until Sept. 30 to move their data to other public clouds before its service ended. However, the company last week extended its deadline to Oct. 15.
Bob Hankins, vice president of storage solutions for New York-based Logicalis U.S., told CRN in an emailed response that Logicalis provides a number of cloud-based solutions including disaster recovery as a service, hosted Exchange, and IaaS via the Logicalis Enterprise Cloud.
"Logicalis cloud computing customers can be secure in the knowledge that their cloud-based data is secure, private and protected by Logicalis. ... Nirvanix is one of our many cloud partners. It is unfortunate that Nirvanix is leaving the market, but Logicalis has other cloud storage relationships and Nirvanix’s exit will have no negative impact on our business or customers," Hankins wrote.
