Cisco Cius

Cisco launched Cius, its Android-based tablet and unified communications endpoint, at the end of July, more than a year after first unveiling the device. It's undoubtedly a gamble for Cisco, but the company has been consistent in positioning Cius as a true business-tablet: not just a mobile computing device, but a true unified communications endpoint that extends a business' infrastructure out to the mobile edge and does so more securely and more flexibly than they'd get with, say, an iPad. It's an investment, undoubtedly -- the docking base along costs $400 -- but if Cius performs everything Cisco says it can, from VDI to mobile security and high definition videoconferencing, it could be a winner for the networking titan.

ARM Cortex-A series Architecture

ARM may not be a household name yet, but that's probably because of the company's business model: it licenses its microprocessor architecture to third party vendors such as Nvidia, Qualcomm and Apple. ARM's Cortex-A Series architecture has been the bigger winner so far; Apple's A5 system-on-a-chip platform for the iPad 2 is based on ARM's Cortex-A9 dual core CPU. Nvidia is famous for its stellar GPU technology and popular graphics cards, but the company has a new franchise with its Tegra mobile platform. The system-on-a-chip combines CPU and GPU capabilities on a single die; the dual core Tegra 2 processor series is based on ARM's Cortex-A9 architecture and is featured in devices such as Motorola's Xoom tablet and Atrix 4G smartphone, Samsung's Galaxy Tab and LG's Optimus smartphone.
