7 New Apple Products That May Be Up Next

Along with new iPhones, Apple may be planning to launch new additions to its iPad and Mac lineups in the coming weeks.

Fact: Apple's fabled iPhone, iPad Pro, Mac and Watch lines have gone without any updates in 2018 so far. (The 9.7-inch iPad did get an update in March). And so, Apple's "Gather Round" product event scheduled for Sept. 12 is generating plenty of rumors about what the company has in store. The follow-up to the iPhone X? (Certainly!) Updates to the iPad Pro and Apple Watch? (Probably!) A new Mac Mini? (Maybe!) We'll have full coverage on the announcements from Tim Cook and co. on Sept. 12, but in the meantime, we've rounded up the leading rumors on seven Apple products that could be coming next.

iPhone XS (5.8-inch)

An array of rumors suggest that Apple is planning a successor to last year's iPhone X in the same 5.8-inch size, which some reports indicate will be called the iPhone XS. Like the iPhone X, the successor model will offer an OLED display, Face ID facial recognition for log-in and a dual rear camera system. Some rumors peg the iPhone XS resolution at 2,436 x 1,125 pixels--identical to the iPhone X--and point to the phone featuring a faster new processor (the A12) and 4 GB of RAM. One difference is that internal storage is expected to max out at 512 GB, compared to 256 GB with the iPhone X (Samsung's Galaxy Note9 also comes in a 512 GB configuration). Other configurations could be 64 GB and 256 GB. The iPhone XS display may also feature Corning's Gorilla Glass 6 for improved durability, a stainless steel frame and up to an 2,800mAh battery.

iPhone XS (6.5-inch)

Apple is rumored to be introducing a significantly larger model along the iPhone XS, which will share many of the same features. The larger iPhone XS is expected to feature a 6.5-inch OLED display, but offer slightly better resolution at 2,688 x 1,242 pixels. The larger model could also offer a bigger battery--up to 3,400mAh--but otherwise mostly follow the 5.8-inch iPhone XS in offering Face ID authentication, a dual rear camera, the A12 processor, 4 GB of RAM, Gorilla Glass 6 and a stainless steel frame. A configuration with 512 GB of internal storage is also rumored for the larger iPhone XS, along with 64 GB and 256 GB models.

6.1-inch iPhone

There are fewer rumors about the naming for the third new iPhone that is expected Sept. 12 (the "iPhone 9" is one possibility that has been suggested). What we do know is that the model is likely to feature a 6.1-inch display and serve as the entry-level version in the lineup, geared toward affordability and offering fewer premium features. Rumors suggest the 6.1-inch iPhone will still get a nearly edge-to-edge display, akin to the iPhone X, but the display is expected to use LCD technology (like in the iPhone 8) rather than OLED. Reports say the display will also be lower-res, possibly 1,792 x 828 pixels, and that the device will have a single rear camera, 3 GB of RAM and an aluminum frame. Notably, the 6.1-inch iPhone is also expected to rely on Face ID facial recognition instead of Touch ID fingerprint recognition, which would mark the end of Touch ID in the iPhone line. It will, however, most likely get the A12 processor and Gorilla Glass 6, according to reports.

iPad Pro

A number of rumors suggest Apple is planning a major refresh for the iPad Pro this fall, and there appears to be a decent chance that the updated devices may be unveiled Sept. 12. Some reports say that Apple will announce an 11-inch iPad Pro--presumably taking the place of the existing 10.5-inch iPad Pro--alongside an upgraded 12.9-inch iPad Pro.

The biggest changes for the new iPad Pro models could include a switch from Touch ID fingerprint authentication to Face ID facial recognition for authentication--as well as the removal of the home button, which is no longer required for fingerprint log-in. The new iPad Pro will thus introduce the types of navigation gestures used on the iPhone X, according to some reports. The tablet is not expected to have a notch for the camera at the top of its screen, while the new iPad Pro may include thinner bezels and rounded corners on the display. Updated processors are expected, as well.

Apple Watch, Series 4

Reports suggest it's nearly certain Apple will debut the next generation of its smartwatch on Sept. 12--the Apple Watch, Series 4. Two new Apple Watch models may be on the way, which are expected to get an increase in display size. The smaller Apple Watch could move to a 1.57-inch screen, from 1.5 inches currently, while the larger Apple Watch could get a 1.78-inch display, compared to the current 1.65-inch size. Slimmer bezels may enable the larger screen sizes. Other changes in the fourth-gen Apple Watch could include longer battery life and additional features for health monitoring.

MacBook Air

Apple released its latest update to the MacBook Air in June 2017, but the laptop has stayed relatively unchanged for years. Some rumors have circulated suggesting that a new MacBook Air could be on the way for 2018. But well-known analyst Ming-Chi Kuo of TF International Securities has predicted that a new affordably priced Apple notebook—which won't feature MacBook Air branding—is set for shipping in the fall, and will likely take the place of the aging MacBook Air in the Mac portfolio.

Mac Mini

Kuo has also predicted that Apple will release an updated version of the Mac Mini--Apple's low-priced, compact-sized desktop--some time this fall. Apple last updated the Mac Mini in October 2014. Whether that means Apple could announce the new Mac Mini on Sept. 12, or at a later date, is unclear. Reports suggest the new Mac Mini will offer updated processors and a wider number of storage configurations than the previous model.
