The Best In DLP And Endpoint Protection
Symantec held its market-leading position in data loss prevention and endpoint protection sold through the channel during the third quarter of 2019, according to new data from Port Washington, N.Y.-based The NPD Group. The NPD Group tracks monthly technology sales-out information from the largest IT distributors and resellers in the U.S., down to the item level and with overlap removed.
The total value of data loss prevention and endpoint protection technology sold during third-quarter 2019 was $393.5 million, up 0.3 percent from $392.2 million a year ago. Three of the five market share leaders recorded a reduction in year-over-year data loss prevention and endpoint protection sales, with only Palo Alto Networks and IBM growing their dollar share in the market over the past 12 months.
Most of the growth in data loss prevention and endpoint protection came from outside the five market leaders, with the remaining vendors in the sector increasing their dollar share from 39.4 percent to 47 percent over the past year and growing cumulative sales from $154.6 million in third-quarter 2018 to $185 million in the most recent quarter.

5. Palo Alto Networks
Dollar Share: 4.6 Percent
Palo Alto Networks saw a massive jump in its data loss prevention and endpoint protection sales in the third quarter to $18.1 million, according to NPD, up 80.5 percent from $10 million in revenue at the same time last year. The Santa Clara, Calif.-based company also fared well from a dollar share perspective, improving 2 percent from 2.6 percent a year earlier.
During the quarter, Palo Alto Networks closed the $75 million acquisition of Mountain View, Calif.-based Zingbox to accelerate the delivery of IoT security through its next-generation firewall and Cortex security operations platform. The cloud-based service uses AI and machine learning technologies to help organizations discover, identify, secure, and optimize connected devices.
4. FireEye
Dollar Share: 5.2 Percent
FireEye saw its data loss prevention and endpoint protection sales in the third quarter tumble to $20.5 million, according to NPD, down 25.8 percent from sales of $27.6 million at the same time last year. The dollar share hit for the Milpitas, Calif.-based vendor was also significant, dropping 1.8 percent from 7 percent a year earlier.
The FireEye Email Security EX Attachment/URL Engine Cloud Subscription License Renewal was the sixth-highest-selling model of the quarter on a per-unit basis. It is intended to address email-based cyber attacks by detonating and analyzing suspicious email attachments as well as embedded URLs.
3. IBM
Dollar Share: 6.1 Percent
IBM’s data loss prevention and endpoint protection revenue in the third quarter jumped to $23.8 million, according to NPD, up 8.4 percent from $22 million this time last year. The Armonk, N.Y.-based vendor also got a boost from a dollar share perspective, climbing 0.5 percent from 5.6 percent a year earlier.
Big Blue this month announced Cloud Pak for Security, which provides open-source technology for hunting threats, automation capabilities to help speed response to cyberattacks, and the ability to run in any environment. The platform leverages open-source technology to search and translate security data from a variety of sources and bring together security insights from across a multicloud IT environment.
2. McAfee
Dollar Share: 9.8 Percent
McAfee’s data loss prevention and endpoint protection revenue in the third quarter plummeted to $38.7 million, down 30.5 percent from $55.7 million the same time a year ago. The hit to the Santa Clara, Calif.-based vendor’s dollar share was also severe, sinking 4.4 percent from 14.2 percent in the third quarter of 2018.
The McAfee Endpoint Protection Advanced Suite Support License was the fifth-highest-selling model of the quarter on a per-unit basis. It is intended to both block malware and zero-day threats as well as protect mobile systems on and off the network through centralized policy-based management, access control, and auditing.
1. Symantec
Dollar Share: 27.3 Percent
Data loss prevention and endpoint protection revenue for Symantec in the third quarter of 2019 tumbled to $107.3 million, down 12.2 percent from $122.2 million at this time last year. The business, which is now a division of San Jose, Calif.-based Broadcom, also suffered from a dollar share perspective, which tumbled 3.9 percent from 31.2 percent a year ago.
The Symantec Critical Protection for Endpoint Protection Small Business Edition was the third-highest-selling model of the quarter on a per-unit basis.
Symantec also had the eighth-, ninth-, and tenth-highest-selling models on a per-unit basis last quarter: the Symantec Data Loss Prevention Network Monitor and Network Prevent; the Symantec Data Loss Prevention Network Monitor and Network Prevent for E-Mail; and the Symantec Endpoint Protection Maintenance Renewal.
