Top 5 Hyper-Converged Infrastructure Leaders
Nutanix took home the gold medal for the most hyper-converged infrastructure systems sold through the channel in the U.S. during the second quarter of 2019, according to data from The NPD Group.
Total hyper-converged infrastructure (HCI) sales hit $128 million for the second quarter, down 10 percent year over year, according to Port Washington, N.Y.-based NPD Group, which tracks monthly technology sales out data from the largest distributors and resellers in the U.S. Nutanix, NetApp, Dell EMC, Cohesity and Hewlett Packard Enterprise together account for approximately 81 percent of the total hyper-converged market sold through the channel in America.
CRN breaks down the five best-selling hyper-converged infrastructure system brands for the second quarter of 2019, which spanned from April 2019 to June 2019, based on data from the NPD Group.
NPD’s Hyper-Converged Infrastructure category does not includes sales of associated servers, storage, software, processors, or memory, which are tracked under separate categories.
5. Hewlett Packard Enterprise
Dollar Share: 5.5%
San Jose, Calif.-based Hewlett Packard Enterprise took home fifth place in terms of hyper-converged dollar share with 5.5 percent in the second quarter, up from 3.1 percent share during the same quarter one year ago. HPE generated just over $7 million in HCI sales via the channel in North America during the second quarter 2019, up from $4.5 million year over year.
HPE had two of the most popular hyper-converged systems sold during the quarter. HPE SimpliVity 380 Gen10 was the fourth best-selling HCI product during the quarter, while HPE Synergy NIC was the tenth highest selling system in the market. Last year, HPE CEO Antonio Neri told CRN that his company’s HCI portfolio is on pace to be more than a $1 billion business.
4. Cohesity
Dollar Share: 6.1%
Hyper-converged and data management specialist Cohesity generated a total of $7.8 million HCI sales during the second quarter, representing a 165 percent spike in revenue year over year. The San Jose, Calif.-based company captured 6.1 percent dollar share, up from 2.1 percent share in the second quarter of 2018.
In May, Cohesity unveiled its first-ever acquisition with the purchase Imanis Data, a developer of enterpriser backup and data management technology for distributed databases including Hadoop and NoSQL. On the innovation front, the company recently release Cohesity CyberScan, a new application that leverages backup data to assess the vulnerabilities and risk posture of an enterprise’s IT environment.
3. Dell EMC
Dollar Share: 7.2%
The worldwide leader in hyper-converged infrastructure, storage and servers placed third in NPD Group’s list with 7.2 percent dollar share in the second quarter, up from 5.6 percent share year over year. Dell EMC, which is part of Dell Technologies, generated $9.2 million in HCI sales via the channel in North America during the quarter, an increase from the $8.1 million in revenue in the same quarter one year ago.
2. NetApp
Dollar Share: 8.1%
The Sunnyvale, Calif.-based storage and data management provider soared in the second quarter with HCI sales of $10.4 million, up a whopping 750 percent compared to the $1.2 million NetApp generated in the second quarter 2018. NetApp’s hyper-converged dollar share jumped to 8.1 percent, up from 0.9 percent share year over year.
Second place NetApp has been doubling down on hyper-converged innovation this year. In June, the company made a large play in the hybrid cloud market with new consumption-based pricing combined with new cloud ties to its HCI technology. NetApp is now letting customers run new cloud data services on its HCI technology, which uniquely orchestrates compute and storage in a cloud-like fashion.
1. Nutanix
Dollar Share: 54.5%
Hyper-converged pioneer Nutanix easily took home first place with a massive dollar share of 54.5 percent. The San Jose, Calif.-based company generated nearly $70 million in HCI sales in the second quarter, down 31 percent year over year. Nutanix had previously won 70 percent dollar share in the second quarter 2018.
Nutanix has nearly completed its transition from hardware and software sales to software and subscription billing. For the company’s fourth fiscal quarter 2019, which ended July 31, Nutanix reported revenue of $300 million, down 1.3 percent year over year. Software and support revenue for the quarter reached $287 million, an increase of 7 percent from last year’s $268 million. For the entire fiscal year 2019, Nutanix generated revenue of $1.24 billion, representing flat sales year over year which was mainly attributed the company’s planned reduction in hardware sales.
