Adobe Releases CS5, Touts iPhone, iPad Compatibility

The Adobe CS5 includes many of the technologies which have helped Adobe grow to be a powerhouse in the design and development software market, including new releases of Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign, and Dreamweaver.

The CS5 family of applications allows customers to create content and applications for the upcoming release of Adobe's Flash Player 10.1 and Adobe AIR2. AIR applications allow rich media apps to work across a wide range of platforms.

Flash Professional CS5, part of the new CS5 suite, allows designers and developers to create, test, and deliver Web content across multiple mobile platforms and mobile devices. It includes Adobe's new Packager for iPhone tool preview. Packager for iPhone enables AIR applications to in theory be deployed on the Apple iPhone and iPad, subject to Apple's requirements and approval, Adobe said.

Apple and its CEO Steve Jobs have publicly stated that the company will not support Adobe Flash technology on certain key products. Jobs has claimed that Flash has bugs that impact Apple products and that the multimedia platform is power hungry and can diminish battery life on mobile devices.

Apple's growing sales of iPad and iPhone devices could eventually give them a significant share of the market for devices which consumers use to access the Internet and negatively impact the number of software developers who include compatibility with Adobe technology in their applications, Adobe warned last week.

Adobe's share prices slipped about 1.3 percent to $35.02 per share on Monday.
