CA Rebrands Its Data Protection Software Family Around ARCserve Name
CA Technologies has revamped its data protection software by bringing several of its applications together as part of an complete family of applications based around its ARCserve offering.
CA Technologies, which until last week was known more simply as CA, has rebranded several of its data protection applications with the ARCserve name, and introduced a new disk-to-disk backup application with deduplication-like technology, said Eric Pitcher, senior vice president of technology strategy for the company’s CA Recovery Management business unit.
CA, in expanding on the legacy of its 20-year-old ARCserve technology, is not the only company currently looking to take advantage of a legacy data protection brand.
EMC earlier this month said it is investing in its long-ignored Networker data protection business, which it acquired with the 2003 purchase of Legato Systems, by tightly integrating NetWorker with its Data Domain dedupe technology and integrating it with the EMC Atmos cloud storage platform.
CA’s ARCserve revamp starts with ARCserve r15 itself, which now includes granular restoration of Microsoft Active Director and SharePoint data, enhanced storage resource management reporting, and agent support for Microsoft Exchange 2010, SharePoint 2010, and IBM Lotus Domino 8.5 for seamless backup across a broad range of platforms, Pitcher said. It also now allows SAN-based backups across Unix and Linux servers, he said.
CA’s previous XOsoft Replication application has been renamed CA ARCserve Replication r15, and now includes the ability to do replications offline to cut network bandwidth, the ability to balance network resources by replicating different types of data at different times, and the ability to replicate compressed and deduplicated files.
ARCserve High Availability r15, formerly known as CA XOsoft High Availability, was updated with the ability to replicate and failover an entire physical or virtual Windows server including the operating system, system state, applications, and data.
New to the ARCserve family is CA ARCserve D2D, an application which backs up snapshots of changed data and provides bare-metal restoration of crashed systems to dissimilar hardware. It works with both physical and virtual servers, and provides a choice of four different types of data restore operations.
Next: Benefits To Customers And Partners
CA sees no other vendor offering bare metal restore, backup, replication, and recovery in a single solution, as well as those capabilities that work with customers’ existing data protection software, Pitcher said.
’We can add our product to a customer’s mix to enhance their CommVault, Backup Exec, and so on,’ he said. ’For a reseller, that’s important. The customer may be happy with their current backup solution. But if they want to add high-availability or disk-to-disk backup, they can use their existing software and ARCserve.’
The CA ARCserve family of data protection software is a 100 percent channel product, said Adam Famularo, senior vice president and general manager of CA’s Recovery Management business unit.
With the new ARCserve family, CA will make new training courses available to partners, Famularo said.
The company is also providing a direct sales force charged specifically to help partners close deals, he said.
Partners can also qualify for free software to use internally as long as it is not part of a managed service for customers, as well as a deal registration bonus of up to 40 percent.
The company also has a grandfather clause for new partners, Famularo said. ’Any partner who has reached a certain level in a competitor’s channel program can sign up with CA and automatically come in that that level,’ he said.
The new CA ARCserve family is currently available.
